Types Of Portable Wheelchair Ramps
Getting around in a wheelchair has been made much easier by the advent of the portable types. As the name suggests, these allow the users to get around more easily with little or no help at all. The great thing about portable wheelchairs is that they coma with equally easy to use and affective wheelchair ramps to compliment their applications.
There are basically four different types of portable wheelchair ramps with the most common one being. It is a simple wedge shaped design allowing the wheelchair to enter a building by providing a mini-ramp for access. The ramp will allow a door access from a height of about 1 inch to just over 6 inches. These types of wheelchair ramps are made of rubber or metal and are typically 34 inches wide to accommodate door widths.
The suitcase wheelchair ramp gets its name from the way that it’s stored and carried. They come in lengths of 2 feet to 6 feet and can be used to bridge the gap over curbs, raised landings as well as van entry. Upon opening it the ramp provides a solid surface over stairs or to bridge a gap from the ground to a van. The ramp can then be folded up (usually with only one fold along its length) and easily moved or stored.
Roll up wheelchair ramps have the central ramp area stored as a rolled up cylinder. When being used, the user is required to simply roll out the central track and attach the side rails to create a rigid surface. The side rails serve as a bumper as well as adding strength to the ramp area. When the ramp is no longer needed, the side rails are removed and roll-up the middle ramp section. This type of ramp made of lightweight aluminum and offers a nylon bag for easy transport.
A telescoping wheelchair ramps is simpler in design, and arguably the easiest to transport. It consists of two thin ramps that are strategically placed to provide a ramp for each side of the wheelchair. It is adjustable up to five feet in length, and locks into place with snap buttons.
